Nepenthes - pitcher types
All species of pitcher plant (Nepenthes) produce at least two types of pitchers called lower and upper pitchers after the location on the shoot. Some species also produce a kind of intermediate form. The picture illustrates the two main types of the Nepenthes x mixta hybrid. The lower jugs here are cylindrical in shape, more colorful, and the jug faces the mouth towards the jug stem (the elongated midrib of the leaf). The upper jugs are funnel-shaped and with the mouth turned away from the jug stem. In several species, the lower pitchers stand directly on the ground.
