This beautifully illustrated encyclopedia of parasitic plants gives a fantastic overview of the morphological variety of parasitic plants, and describes and illustrates the adaptations that enable plants to be parasitic. The illustrations are magnificent and can only make you admire how nature has created such wonderful creatures almost as if it wants to mask their mal-intentions. In addition to the wonderful illustrations, the book reviews important aspects of plant parasitism such as the physiological mechanisms, the ecology and the putative evolution of parasitism in plants. Hence, the book is a rich source of facts and need-to-knows about parasitic plants and therefore will be a valuable handbook for scientists and a fine introduction to parasitism in plants for non-scientists.

Jeg er meget taknemmelig for de mange billeder, jeg har fået lov at bruge af en lang række botanikere og andre natur interesserede nævnt i bogen. Nogle fagfolk har undret sig over, at jeg ikke har anvendt nogle af Dr. D. L. Nickrents mange glimrende fotos. Det ville jeg meget gerne, men Nickrent forbød mig at bruge fotos taget af ham, hans studerende og af Dr. Lytton Musselman. Hovedårsagen har nok været, at Dr. Nickrent opfattede min bog som en konkurrent til en bog, de havde planer om, og han tillod sig at sende en advarsel på e-mail til 49 botanikere om, at jeg er en parasit.

Bogen er skrevet i et overvejende ikke-teknisk sprog; men hvor fagtermer benyttes, er de forklaret på stedet, i særlige bokse eller i ordlisten, så bogen kan læses af alle, der blot interesserer sig for natur. Plantenavne er dog med enkelte undtagelser holdt på latin, idet populærnavne kun har éntydig værdi i begrænsede lokale områder.
